Good inside
By Federico Bulsara

The best Chilean sportsman in 2007 is not tired to accumulate successes and faces a season with a lot of challenges : staying in the top 10, playing the Olympic Games in Beijing, and trying to make Chile back in the DC World Group. And above all, in his full agenda , he still have the place for the solidarity.

Roger Federer is the one who is the nearest of the perfection that it exists in tennis. To win against him doesn’t require that the Swiss got a day with a low yield, unless if his rival played very good that day. Until the 12th of last november, Fernando Francisco González Ciuffardi didn’t know what it was to beat the world number 1. Ten times he tried but lost. But, he played the perfect match to win this first match of the Shanghai Masters Cup, which had all the attention of the tennis planet in China, tournament with the 8 best players in the world.

We’ll never forget. Because this mark made the best year in the carrier of the chilean player. Until now, his balance in the previous seasons was known as the crown of Roland Garros juniors in 1998, 7 ATP titles in the singles ( he got the 8 in 2007), 3 in doubles, 2 titles in the World Team Cup, one gold medal in the Olympic Games in doubles with Nicolas Massu and another one in bronze in the singles)

And, what the Bombardero de la Reina did ?

A lot, perhaps too much. He started in january when he was the third chilean after Ayala and Rios to reach a grand slam final. In the Australian Open, only the immensity of Federer could stop the chilean, who played his best tennis during the semi final against the german Tommy Haas with 42 winners and 3 unforced errors. Before, he defeated the world number 2, the spanish player Rafael Nadal.

This start of the season allowed him to jump from the ATP 9 to the ATP 5 in the ranking, his best ranking ever in the ranking. At the end of the previous year, he was number 7, he finished for 2 consecutive year in the top 10 and for the 3rd year he won more than 1 million dollars.

For the journalists in Chile, Who else than Fernando could win the title of the best of the best ?

No one. It’s the second time that Fernando received the most important distinction in Chile, in 2004, he received it with Nicolas Massu for what he’s done in Athens.

His stability in his personal life, with any doubt, helped him to deal with this great year. Since the mid 2006, Fernando is dating with the Argentine, Gisela Dulko, tennis player like him. The best, to understand him and to support him in the life full of trips. Together, they played an exhibition in Viña del Mar where they showed their love in the whole world.

Nevertheless, he’s still one of the personality the most recognised (appreciated) in the country, he avoids to appear in the pages which are not sports.

Out of the tennis courts, Feña is not insensitive when talking about solidarity. For example, he remembers that on the 3rd of December 2004, with Nicolas Massu, Don Francisco, they played a match in the national stadium to obtain money for the Teleton.

It wasn’t the only time and it won’t be the last time. On the 2nd of october, last year, on the Paseo Ahumada, he played a match with Robinson Mendez, player in a wheel chair, it was to support the campain of Mario Kzeutzberger. He ended the year 2007 with an exhibition in the Arena Santiago wth the player from Argentina, Augustin Calleri. They gained 90 millions of pesos for the foundation “Hogar de Cristo”, to build a center for the children in Tocopilla.

Talking about the future…

It seems that it’s a part of the inventory of the national sportsman, but González has only 27 years old. An age in which he is fully mature and solid to continue to face new challenges. The bar is high but he showed that he could do it.

With simplicity, he said that his objective for 2008 is “the same as always, playing and feeling well. “A place in the ranking ?” if I play well and feel good on the court, automatically, the ranking will improve”.

During these days, González is in Viña del Mar, a tournament very special for him, he won it in 2002 and 2004. Nevertheless, the last time I was there, I suffered : it was just after his efforts in Australia, he was eliminated by the spanish Albert Montanes in the quarters.

The rest of the year is to win points. Trying to threaten the supremacy of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic. Playing another time the Masters for the chilean would be another dream.

For the year 2008, he also have challenges. After the loss against Israel, Chile lost in the American zone in the Davis Cup. It only remains to come back in the World Group. In april, the first obstacle will be Mexico or Canada (from the webmaster : now we know it will be Canada), If they win, they’ll play the play-offs.

More.. In august, all the sports planet will have the eyes in Beijing. The capital of China will host the Olympic Games. González will go there to reediate the days of glory he shared with Nicolas Massu in Athens.

Does he suit to everyone ?

Yes, it’s Fernando González. One authentical idol. Women would like to be with him and the men would like to be like him

After the loss in the Australian Open, Fernando flew directly to Chile to have some exams before going to Viña del Mar and prepare for the Movistar Open, tournament he already won twice and a tournament he really wishes to win a third time :)

When you arrive in the Las Salinas club, Viña, you have the posters :-)

7- Exhibition match…and trophee ceremony

title3.jpg

Fernando played an exhibition match against Santiago Ventura, who lost against Monaco in the semi final. With the support of his crowd, Fernando defeated Ventura in straights sets 6/4 6/1. Afterwards, he received the trophee for the third time of his career after 2002 and 2004 :-) )

“The celebration started last night and continued today. I’m very happy but I’m sad thinking that Monaco couldn’t play the final, I’m happy that the stadium is almost full. I thank all the people to follow me in this beautiful moment”.

“I don’t play a lot of tournaments on clay, but Viña is one of my favourites, it takes a great place in my calendar. I’m happy”

6- Semi final vs Pablo Cuevas…and Fernando campeón de Viña for the 3rd time !!

gonzo_semies1.jpg

Fernando defeated Pablo Cuevas 6-7(4), 7-6(6), 6-2 in the semi-final and won the tournament for the third time. Juan Monaco was qualified for the final but was injured during his double match. Sad for Juan and for his fans. We hope that he’ll recover soon. On sunday, an exhibition will be played for the crowd.

After his match…

“I am enjoying this triumph, but people will not be able to enjoy a good match as the one that was due to play in the final. I’m sad that Monaco doesn’t have the possibility to play the final, I’m feeling sad for him because he’s a great professional, and above all because he’s a great person. I wish him to recover very fast”.

He said :” I didn’t have the tennis to win against Cuevas, but the public raised me. Per moments, the crowd was with me side by side and I even had luck when a match point was out and got all the court. The audience played a very important role in all this”.

5- Quarter final vs Carlos Berlocq… Fernando won 7-5, 6-0, in 1h22 mins :) Fernando is in the semis. The dream continues. The first set lasted 58 minutes and was very tough. Until 5-5, none of the both players lost their serve, but on the 11th game, Fernando broke Berlocq. In the second set, the things were easier for Fernando, he won the last 6 games of the match.

After his victory, Fernando said : “I’m very happy, I’m feeling better and better, and I’m moving better. I still have hopes, more today. I’m very happy to be here and to win”.

gdeportes.jpg

About Cuevas, his next opponent..

“He’s young, and won great matches this week. It will be tough, but I’m feeling well and will a lot of confidence”

4- 2nd round vs Diego Hartfield.. Very warm atmosphere, Fernando got all the crowd behind him this time. Fernando didn’t play his best tennis that night, especially the serve, many double faults, but at least he won the match, 6/3 6/4. After the match, the fans went into the court because Fernando didn’t sign as much as after his first match. I was a bit upset because poor Fernando had to leave very fast. People love their player, but sometimes, they don’t realize that it can be dangerous. Fernando is loved in his homecountry, it’s obvious :) He can count on the support of the chileans :) For me, it was the last match. I was disappointed to leave and fly back to France, but that’s the life :)

“I think that I played a correct match, where I took advantage of Hartfield’s errors.”

“I’m improving match after match and I have much confidence, but I have to improve a little more my serve and my backhand”

About his match against Berlocq on friday….

“He’s playing well and he won againt Horna a great match. He’s a player who is hitting the ball very strong”

About being the favourite to win for the 3rd time, Viña del Mar…

“I have always said that I could win against anyone and I can also lose against anyone”. “If I continue to play like that and if I don’t make mistakes, I think I can win the title”.

3- 1st round vs Paul Capdeville.. Warm atmosphere in this first round with two chileans. Paul Capdeville had his fans (Chi chi chi le le le Viva Chile Capdeville). The court was full at 10.15 pm and it was strange for me to be there. My first match in Chile to watch Fernando !! Fernando won the match in straights sets 7/5 6/3. At the end of the match, a smily Fernando played with radio-controlled cars with a fan :)

After the match :

“It was a tough match, Paul played well and it was tight a several moments of the match, but I had the chance to take advantage of the opportunities”

“It has been a long time that I didn’t play on clay, I felt well even if I have to improve some things especially with the speed of my forehand”

Next match vs Hartfield, he has one day off..

“I’m going to be like against the other players in this kind of tournament, very complicated, he will do everything to beat me ; but I’m feeling ok and I committed a few mistakes, I have a lot of possibilities to win”.

About the pressure to be the last chilean in competition …

“I don’t feel the pressure at all, I don’t feel that I have to win the title. Obviously, it’s always great to win the title in your country, but I insist, I don’t feel the pressure, the most important is to play my tennis in each match”.

2- Fernando will also play the doubles with the player from Argentina, J.I Chela, unfortunately they lost in the first round, on monday against the pair Berlocq/Vassalo-Arguello :(

1- On sunday, Fernando González and Nicolas Massu played with the children :)

Don’t worry, you’ll stay in the world group, Chile !!! You still have the support of your fans !!

Fernando will the supporters :)

At the beginning of the second set, Fernando mobilized the troups in the south sector. He supported Nicolas with the fans during each break. Fernando did the same thing in Rancagua when Chile hosted Slovakia and Nico had won.
