It’s time for Fernando to try to forget the US Open result. Now, it’s time to think to the DC play off versus Israël but before that, Fernando is scheduled to play the tournament of Beijing, China, starting on September 10th.
30.08 : And another loss…Fernando lost in 5 sets last night in New York, 4/6 1/6 6/3 7/5 4/6. I hope Fernando will find the mental strengh to come back because this us tourney is a real nightmare for him (and his fans). Fernando didn’t win a match in this us tourney. Bad with the davis cup play off coming up against Israël. The chilean team won’t play Israel (which has a very good double team) with the best of their confidence, Nicolas Massu lost in the first round as well in New York. Fernando, we’ll always support you !!

Fernando González : “It’s necessary to analyse what’s happening to me”
Severe, was the self-criticism that the number 1 player from Chile made after his loss in the first round of the US Open against the Russian, Gabashvili. The Chilean, Fernando González, number 7 in the world, that only lost in the first round once after seven participations in the US Open, fell in the first round against the Russian Teimuraz Gabashvili (94°) by 4-6, 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 and 4-6.
“I am not making anything different although I lose in the first rounds of the tournaments. Except that the results have changed. Tennis has these things. But there still have many challenges left “.
González said about his opponent :”he served very well during the whole match. It’s difficult to play. I did the best I could”
“He played canon shots ; I could not do anything”, he added. During the match, González lost the nerves, he threw the racket, he faced the judges.
“I committed many errors. In the last two months, I have not been able to play that much. I had expectations in this match, but I did not manage to do more. It is necessary to analyze what it is happening to me. This situation does not satisfy me”

Fernando’s message from his official website.
Hello friends,
I spent several days adaptating here in New York and I’m ready to return to play, and of course to win
They have asked me about the defeats in the previous tournaments, but for me, it passed and I’m always thinking about what it’s going to come. The Us Open, the last grand slam of the season, has a special taste. There’s a lot of atmosphere here during the matches. I’ve just arrived in Manhattan on saturday. I’ve trained a lot and I’ll play on wednesday. On monday evening, I made a tour with Adrian Garcia in Soho. Adrian lost in the last round of the qualies. We were close to be 4 chileans in the final draw, something historical. My first opponent, Teimuraz Gabashvili, is a young player, who hits the ball very hard. It will be a quite difficult match but I’m feeling well.
22.08 :The US Open main draw is now available. Fernando is the seed number 7. Fernando will face in the first round, the Russian Gabashvili, it won’t be easy but possible. Fernando’s draw could have been worse and I think that if the confidence is back and if he’s in a good shape, he can at least go to the quarters. In his part, he’ll also have Marat Safin (possible 3rd round), Ljubicic, Ferrer, Nalbandian, Tipsarevic and… Nadal. Well, most of the players had some up and downs (Safin, Ljubicic, Nalbandian), so if they are in a bad day, it’s possible for Fernando to beat them. Tipsarevic who def. in Wimbledon is here. On the other part of his draw, he has maybe the most dangerous players (Djokovic, Hewitt, Moya and … Stepanek who are in a good shape at this moment), but he could face one of them in the semis, before that he’ll have to win all his matches. Vamos Fernando !!!
Head to Head : Gabashvili and González will face for the first time this year
Fernando lost one spot, so he’s now number 7 with 2255 points at the ATP Entry System ranking and he’s still number 6, at the Race, with 295 points. If Fernando doesn’t react very fast, he may loses this number 6 spot because there are a few points between him and the others. The second part of the season will be very interesting and maybe stressful for Fernando and his fans. VAMOS !!
Fernando González “I’d like to be a father, but it would be irresponsible today with the life I have”
From Nelson González V.
SANTIAGO, July 17th- He’s one of the most respectful players on the tour and for the last semester of the year, Fernando González has as a main goal to qualify directly for the Masters Cup in China.
He recognises that some of his defaults are to be “very disordered and to not be on time” and one of the good anecdotes he remembers was when he lost himself in London when he was young.
The best chilean tennis player, today, gave an interview to Terra.cl
1. – Do you know that one of the important event in the history of the Chilean television has been the win of the gold medals in Athens?
FG : It is one of the most important memories of my career. It was unforgettable, still more with the welcome people gave us. It has been the greatest moment of my career, until now.
2. – Is it true that your father prefered to offer you more articles of tennis than soccer, your other passion?
FG : Yes, in Christmas I always received gifts more related to this last sport. Soccer delights me, but since we changed to a house that is next to a tennis club, I happened to be there. I also had to be good in school, because my mother threatened me because if I did not have good notes, there would not be more tennis. But I was an average student.
3- Do you read what it is written about you after each match ?
- No. When I go on the internet, I look the headlines and the photos. If I lose I know very clearly why. I have a real respect to those who write, but I avoid to read what they write.
4- Let’s talk about the strokes and the charismas of the players on the ATP Tour. For example, who has the best forehand ?
- The best forehand, I believe that I have it
- The best service was to Pete Sampras and at the moment, Andy Roddick.
- The best backhand… I believe that the one of Andre Agassi and the one of (David) Nalbandian.
- The player who gives everything on court is Rafael Nadal.
- The nicest, I think it is Roddick, on the court, like an opponent, he is a great competitor and if he loses, he recognizes much to his opponent.
- The most petty ?… can be Lleyton Hewitt
5. – What would you change in the rules of the ATP ?
- The obligation to play 18 tournaments, is enough. The antidoping control system is another subject. About the way it is, it’s not good, you’ve just finished a match and immediately, you have to go to the antidoping control, they don’t let you enjoy the triumph or recover after the defeat.
6. – The “Bichi” Fuertes said in this same section that in Chile, they don’t respect the sports idols, do you agree with him ?
- Look, people carry much importance to what it is said on the radio, on the television or on what it is written. The same, about Marcelo Rios, he showed more things to people outside tennis. All the things he won, started to be on the side, and that is no good. I don’t give time to the tabloids, they are not interested by me and I don’t speak about my private life. As a chilean, we are negative and remembered the bad, not good to know what the sportsman has done.
7. – What do you want to do once you left tennis ?
- I want to continue this activity, it is my passion. Perhaps, I won’t be immediately a coach and travel on tour but working with the boys between 14 and 18 years, it’s when they learn more. I can have an academy, perhaps… I also like the television, I liked a lot the program I have done during the year. But, that’s the way life goes…
8. – Which is the gift that you remember the most from your admirers ?
- In the last DC tie in La Serena, they gave to Nicolas and me , a pretty nice flag with our faces, very pretty. I always keep the souvenirs and gifts I receive
9. – And the best anecdote in your career ?
- Oh, there are several, but when I lost myself in London. I was 16 years old, and I was lost, I have been walking for about 3 hours, and to take a taxi is not cheap there. In addition, at that age, the money was necessary so I had to take care of it LOL But, the best anecdotes are when you are young playing around the world.
10. – To seduce ? Flowers, chocolates or preparing a good dinner ?
- That is mine LOL , the only person who will know it, will be the one whom I’ll prepare it
11. – Would you like to be father and that your son join you to see you play ?
- I would like to, but it is difficult with the rythm of the life of a professional player. It would be something irresponsible from me, but it would be great for my son to see me on court.
The full interview is available on Terra.cl website but it seems that outside Chile we don’t have any access, so if someone could upload the full video on you tube, would be nice, gracias
Another loss for Fernando in the second round of a MS. This time, he lost to Juan-Carlos Ferrero in straights sets 2-6 6-7. Fernando fought hard in the second set saving match points, but it wasn’t enough to come back. The things are getting more and more difficult for Fernando with the US OPEN coming up (and the DC vs Israel), the confidence won’t be at its best before starting the last grand slam of the year. I hope he’ll find the solution very soon.
Fernando González is waiting for his opponent in the seventh Masters Serie of the year. Before playing, he watched a base-ball match but unfortunately, the team of his coach, “Los padres de San Diego” lost against the Cincinnati Reds.
Hello friends,
I’m in Cincinnati.
Ya estoy en Cincinnati. I can tell you that it’s very hot, but here, the court is better to play. I have good memories here, because I played well. Moreover, there’s a golf club close to the tennis. Nobody played on it, but one day, I’ll have to play there.
On sunday, I was with my coach, Larry Stefanki, to watch a match of base-Ball. He’s a fan of the “Padres de San Diego”, who are playing here in Cincinnati against the Reds. Unfortunately, they lost 8-5. It’s entertaining, although a little bit slow for the ones who don’t know the game a lot. But, it’s a nice show.
I have no idea against whom I’m going to play. I have to wait for the winner of the match Ferrero/Rochus. The idea is to continue to play like I’m playing at the moment, good, with the wish to win. I feel that I’m good.
I’d like to comment the final of sunday in Canada. First of all, that Novak Djokovic, champion after defeating in the final Roger Federer and in the semies, Rafael Nadal, he’s a great player. From the bottom of the court, he’s regular and hits well on both sides of the court. He serves very well and as he’s tall, he returns many balls. Without any doubt, he’ll be for a long time on top. He only has 20 years.
