Pictures of Fernando from Estoril

[Estoril website]

ATP World No. 5 Fernando Gonzalez visited the Sport Lisboa Benfica cycling team on Monday, a rest day before his first round match at the Estoril Open. The Chilean, who reached the Australian Open final in January (l. to Federer), set off from the official players hotel in a brand new Mercedes-Benz C-Class car and travelled along the coast of Estoril.

Upon arriving he was welcomed by the Benfica team, including Jose Azevedo – the Tour de France cyclist and former team-mate of Lance Armstrong.

Rally Dakar driver Carlos Sousa, Rally Dakar motorcyclists Rodrigues Helder and Ruben Faria as well as other professional cyclists also greeted Gonzalez.

In the Mercedes-Benz team truck Fernando Gonzalez got dressed up with the official dress of the cycling team, before setting off for an hour-long ride.

The team took the chance to cycle along the coast of Guincho with its famous beaches for surfing.

Gonzalez was impressed by how lightweight the professional bike was and controlled it well in windy conditions.

Fernando is this week, number 6 at the ATP Rankings and will play his first match in Estoril on tuesday vs Paul-Henri Mathieu on the Centre court.

ARTOIS TENNIS PODCAST Interview

April 29, 2007

Interview with Fernando, for the Artois Tennis Podcast

[To download it]

First, he talked about his two fantastic weeks in Melbourne this year… Fernando said that it was a great tournament, he didn’t play well in the first two matches, but then, he played better and better and it was a  good experience.

Second,  about playing consistent shots…Feña said that he changed a couple of things but basically, his game is still the same. He made a lot of adjustements with his backhand, he tried to not serve too hard.

Third, about his new coach, Larry Stefanki… The journalist said that he used to coach Rios, Kafelnikov and Tim Hemnan. How did he get to meet Larry for the first time ?  Fernando said that when he splitted up with Horacio de la Peña, it was tough to find another coach, because most of the guys were already with a player. About Larry, he didn’t need to travel, or to work. So, Fernando called him and told him that he was very interested to work with him. He was interested too so it was very important. So, they talked many times on the phone.

Fourth, about playing on grass, Fernando had good results the years before on this surface, a quarter final in Wimbledon…  Fernando said that first, when you are a South-American, you can be blocked to play on grass, two years ago, he tried to stay at the Queens, he had a good preparation, and very good results. After those results, he knew that he could do well on this surface. He enjoys grass, he has good slices, he enjoys going to the net, he can play different styles than the other South Americans guys. He had a wonderful time in London, the last two years, he stayed for 3-4 weeks, met a few friends, and he tried to do something different.

Fifth, Fernando is always smiling (webmaster : it’s true). The journalist said that he seemed to like the life on tour. Fernando said that something there are things he doesn’t like, like travelling each week, living in different hotels, to be away from his family and friends,  but it’s the “bad” part. The positive thing is that his work is his passion.

Gisela Dulko : First title in Budapest

April 28, 2007

budapest-90.jpg

For once, I’m going to talk about the WTA Tour, just to say that Gisela Dulko, won her first final in Budapest, 6-7 6-2 6-2, against Cirstea. CONGRATULATIONS to her :)

Fernando spent the week there to support her.

Interview after the match, when the journalist talked about Fernando’s presence in Budapest :

Q : Did the presence of your friend, Fernando [Gonzalez, 7th in the men's world rankings] give you some extra support?

GD : “He saw my matches and sometimes we also talked about tennis, and my game. Unfortunately, he had to leave this afternoon as he is going to play in Estoril, Portugal”

April 28th-May 6th : Estoril

Next tournament for Fernando : ATP Estoril (Portugal)

[Tournament website]

[Main draw]

The main draw is now available, Fernando is the seed number 4 and will face in the first round, the Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu, not an easy round because Paulo defeated him in Miami and seems to be in a good shape because he’s today in the final in Casablanca. So, let’s hope that he’ll be a bit tired in Estoril )

Fernando has Davydenko in his part, Davydenko was uncertain but finally decided to play, Gasquet (who went far in Monte-Carlo), Monfils (if he recovered from MC can be dangerous), Horna (who knows well Fernando). The positive thing is that Fernando avoids players like Djokovic, Andreev, and Robredo so I think that there’s a hope for Fernando to go far this week. Good luck to him and VAMOS !!!!

The draw :

1 Davydenko v Q
Gabashvili v Spadea
Gil v Ramirez-Hidalgo
Mirnyi v Gasquet 5

4 Gonzalez v Mathieu
Kunitsyn v Sousa
Horna v Querrey
Monaco v Monfils 8

6 Tursunov v Serra
Russel v Garcia-Lopez
Roitman v Q
Andreev v Djokovic 3

7 Calleri v Udomchoke
Q v del Potro
Korolev v Q
Montanes v Robredo 2

MS Monte-Carlo (summary)

Now, that I’m back, it’s time to make a brief summary of my week in Monte-Carlo.

I arrived with my friend Aurélie, on friday. Aurélie likes Fernando but her favourite player is Tommy Haas. Unfortunately, this year, he withdrew :( Hopefully, she had the chance to see Fernando lol When Tommy is not at a tournament, she watches Fernando with me, but hopefully it’s ok, she finds him very nice and he is born the same day as her, so he’s like a twin :) Aurélie only stayed in Monte-Carlo for the week-end, she had to come back to Paris on monday :(

Monte-Carlo is a great place to watch tennis, with the sea nearby the stadium (see the picture). Personally, I would never go there for my holidays because mostly people are not very nice (except in the stadium, people are nicer in MC than in RG) but during the tennis tournament, I think it’s a great place and it’s also a place to dream a little bit, it’s different from our “normal” life. When you stay there for tennis, you forget your problems of the real life, you are totally disconnected. And, besides watching tennis and your favourites players, you can meet other tennis fans, you become friends because sometimes, you don’t have only tennis in common, it’s always great to speak to people from other countries, discover new cultures, talk foreign languages.

This year, I’ve been lucky to see Fernando at the trainings and at the matches (one single and two doubles),  I also met other tennis addicts, so an almost perfect week. “Almost” because I’d have liked to see Fernando go further in the tournament.

First day and first match with Fernando. Fernando played with Ivan Ljubicic the doubles tournament, maybe to have some practrice on clay. It’s great to see Fernando playing doubles because he’s always smiling during the matches. I remember that when I discovered him, he was playing a double match with Roddick in Paris Indoors, I noticed him mostly because he was always smiling during his match :)

I also think it’s a good way to improve his net game, it’s relaxing, he has fun, so I hope he’ll continue to play in the doubles even if he’ll stay in the top 10. For their first match, they def. Berdych/Hrbaty 67(5) 64 10-6 (Match TB).

Fernando entered in the tournament. I knew that playing Andreev wouldn’t be so easy. Igor defeated him in the DC 1st round this year in Chile, so personnally, I wasn’t very confident. When I discovered the draw, I knew that it would be a tough tournament for Fernando. During that match, I don’t think that Fernando played well, especially at the beginning of the match. The warm-up wasn’t good, many balls out and the start was bad. Igor won easily the first set, 6/2. Fernando, as a fighter, came back in the second set, and played better, he won 6/2. I thought that Fernando was back for real, but Igor won 6/3. Of course, I was disappointed, but I think Fernando really lost the match, my point of view is that he didn’t play really well. I was not as disappointed as in the last Paris Indoors, when he lost to Bennetteau. That day was terrible because Fernando played well and he didn’t deserve to lose that match, that defeat against Andreev wasn’t so painful. When he left the stadium, I saw Fernando disappointed :( Last year, he reached the semis so we can understand his reaction.

Fernando has practriced for two hours with Larry Stefanki, lucky I was :) :) It’s good to see the practrice, it’s of course different from the match. You can see all the preparation of the player, how he works, the communication with the coach. During the days of practrice, Larry communicated a lot with Fernando showing the things to do, it was very interesting. Before starting his training, Fernando warms up, especially his right shoulder, and than, plays tennis, a little warm up and sometimes a short match (when he plays with other players). During these two hours, he only practriced with Larry. I think there were many things to work after that defeat. It was funny because Larry had to pick up the balls and during that time, Fernando was sitting on a chair and watched, he didn’t help Larry a lot. On the other court, next to Gonzo’s, there was Paul-Henri Mathieu practricing and he had to pick up the balls with his coach lol

In the evening, Fernando and Ljubicic played their second match in the doubles against the doubles specialist, Knowles/Nestor. A very good result because Fernando and Ljubicic defeated them 36 64 10-4 (Match TB). Knowles and Nestor were the seed number 3. And, also a good result because Ljubicic played a very long match vs Gasquet and lost it. I thought that they could withdraw to be honest. I think Ljubicic had only 1h15- or 1h30 to rest. So, congratulations guys :)

I was happy for them but at the same time sad, because on friday had to see my family on the other side of the Mediterranean sea.

I spent a great time there watching Fernando, other players, meeting my friends, enjoyed the beautiful weather. Can’t wait for the next tournament !!

Fernando will play in Estoril next week. In a minor tournament, he has good chances to go very far, so I cross my fingers for him, he can do it !! VAMOS !!!

April 25, 2007

gonzo16b.jpg

During this week, I’m going to upload gradually my pictures from Monte-Carlo. I decided to not write on them, so if I found my pictures on other websites, or fotoblogs, I’ll only ask a link to my website, or a word that the pictures are taken from : fernando-gonzalez.net. I could keep the pictures for myself but wanted to share them with the other fans. Thank you in advance :)
